I started as a photographer. It's a way of looking which continues to shape and inform the space of the drawings, which are always filmic and photographic to me.

This selection of images is from the 1990s--photograms and portraits I made in East Palo Alto with a 4x5 camera. I developed the film 'by inspection', a magical process which allows you to briefly shine a light on the negative as it's developing, light where there shouldn't be light.
